Studies start for 11 budding golf course architects

This week was the start of the education journey for the next cohort of budding golf course architects as 11 students from eight countries attended the first in-person workshop of the 2-year education programme.

Held in the TwentyTen Clubhouse at Celtic Manor, the students spent two and a half days learning from Module Leader, Simon Gidman, chair of EIGCA’s Education Board, Niall Glen, and Education Programme Manager (& recent EVQGCD graduate), Sergio Carballo.

After a welcome and introduction to the EIGCA, by Executive Officer, Lindsey Collumbell, students started off their golf course design journey covering the first module subjects of:

  • History of golf course architecture
  • Golf course layout design (Part 1)
  • Golfing strategy
  • Drawing skills

This inaugural workshop was followed by a design masterclass for recent EVQGCD graduates, with EIGCA member and Past President, Ross McMurray, sponsored by EIGCA Gold Partner, Toro. Ross was invited to speak to the students and graduates about his experience of designing a Ryder Cup course (Ross was the designer for the 2010 Ryder Cup course at Celtic Manor).

The students will next meet at Workshop Two, at The Gailes Hotel in Scotland in October, where Module Leader Tim Lobb will take the lead on their learning journey.
