Martin represents the third generation of the Hawtree family to practice golf course architecture; a dynasty spanning over 100 years and dedicated to golf design and the development of golf. The client list of the dynasty runs to many hundreds of golf clubs, their courses either newly designed or redeveloped in part or whole.

Martin took over the practice in 1984. He has been responsible for the design of many new courses throughout the world but has always enjoyed the discipline of working on existing courses, understanding modern requirements within the frame of mind of the original architects such as Colt, Simpson, MacKenzie, or Fowler. Martin has worked throughout Europe, with his signature extending to courses new or old as far afield as Africa, Australia, Canada and India.

In the last 20 years he has developed a particular passion for links golf and has worked on many of the great links in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including six of the Open Championship venues. He now lives in Germany and retired from EIGCA membership in June 2026.

Martin has served the Institute since 1985 when he became Honorary Secretary, a post he held for ten years. He was President of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects from 1996 to 1997.

Recipient of EIGCA’s Outstanding Contribution Award in June 2024.
