Jonathan left Leeds Metropolitan University in 1987 with an Honours Degree and Diploma in Landscape Architecture and immediately began working at St Andrews for the contractor remodelling the Jubilee Course (design work by Donald Steel).

He gained an excellent ‘grassroots’ grounding in construction – designing and building his first golf course – The Chesfield Downs Family Golf Centre in 1988 (now owned and operated by The Club Company and called Chesfield Downs), through to 1990, when he established his own business as a golf course architect. Between 1990 and 1998 Jonathan designed 17 new golf courses in UK, Denmark, Portugal and Turkey and advised over 100 golf clubs on upgrades and improvements.

Between 1998 and 2006 he worked as co-director of Gaunt & Marnoch Limited. During this time Jonathan designed new projects in UK, Ireland (Castleknock), Czechia (Kaskada) and Spain (the New Course – Los Barrancos at la Zagaleta (co-design)), plus the restoration of numerous historic golf courses from the early 20th century originally designed by John Abercromby, Harry Colt, Alister MacKenzie, Willie Park jnr., Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson.

In February 2006, Jonathan established Gaunt Golf Design Limited. He now has an impressive portfolio including over 40 new courses designed and built – in UK, Czechia (Prague City Golf VinoÅ™), Morocco (Oued Fes Golf City), Romania (Stejarii, Bucharest) and USA (Carlson Farm Course, Greensboro CC, NC), plus almost 400 reconstruction/restoration projects throughout UK and Europe. He is now working on new projects in UK, Cyprus, Finland, Denmark and Poland.

Jonathan is responsible for managing a dynamic golf design company with three core golf course architects and a network of expert design associates, landscape architects, consultants, engineers and project managers.

Jonathan is flexible in his approach and has developed a wide experience of working with limited budgets and restricted timescales on difficult sites.

Jonathan plays golf (handicap, 9) at Cavendish Golf Club in the Derbyshire Peak District, designed in 1925 by Dr Alister MacKenzie.
