Renowned links specialists and golf course architects, Mackenzie and Ebert, carried out a comprehensive review of the course in the autumn and work began almost immediately on the 2nd, 9th and 13th holes. The work focuses on the adoption of a consistent bunkering style, developing the rough edged bunkers that have long been a feature of this great old Harry Colt designed course. It also involves a number of new greens and the extensive reshaping of more than half of the green surrounds, the inspiration for this work being the best of the original greens like the 7th and 10th.
Nick Gammon, Managing Director of Trevose, explained that “Our family has always invested in the course and the Club’s facilities but we felt we had reached a point where we needed a longer term plan to develop our golf offering further. We were well aware of the work that Mackenzie & Ebert are doing on 7 of the 10 Open venues and 10 of the top 20 courses in GB & I, as well as on many of Harry Colt’s finest courses, so it seemed a natural fit to approach them. From the first meeting we were confident that we shared the same outlook and their enthusiasm for the project was clear from that day onwards.
The project has progressed quickly because we wanted to build up momentum rapidly to show members and visitors our vision for the course. It has been very exciting to witness the transformation that the team has achieved on the 2nd, 9th and 13th holes in less than 3 months. It has certainly given us considerable confidence that the course improvements will greatly enhance our golfing product and feel sure that others will agree.
The plan is to tackle the 4th hole next autumn, work which will involve a completely new green as well as re-bunkering the entire hole. This has long been our signature hole, but it is fair to say that the green has enormous untapped potential, so we look forward to creating something altogether more exciting that will better showcase our unique location and provide golfers with a stunning view out over the bay and down the Atlantic coast. It is, after all, one of the greatest views in golf.
This plan is a reflection of our ambitions for Trevose to reinforce its position in links golf, offer the best possible facilities to our members and visitors and to attract further regional and national events.”
Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert has masterminded the work.
“For 90 years, golfers have flocked to Trevose to enjoy all that it offers. It has remained so popular because the Gammon family have always re-invested in the facilities. We were hugely impressed with all that they have done and their ambitions for the future. We are honoured to be helping them build on the success that they have enjoyed. Our goal is to make it even better and to build on its obvious strengths and Harry Colt provenance. It is so refreshing to start work so quickly and by the end of the winter, players should notice a huge difference to the 2nd, 9th and 13th holes.”
