On-Site Golf Design completes greens renovation at Mountbellew Golf Club Co. Galway, Ireland

The project which was led by EIGCA Candidate for Membership, David Minogue, in conjunction with the development committee of Mountbellew Golf Club, developed plans to renovate the 2nd, 9th and 18th greens. These greens had been a problem at the club for numerous years due to drainage and shade issues and in some instances caused the course to close during inclement weather.
The development committee realised that these closures were having a detrimental financial impact on the club. On-site Golf Design proposed plans to convert the greens from clay push up construction to modern USGA specification with a combination of new irrigation and a working drainage system on the surrounds. This along with substantial tree removal would help ensure good playing conditions during inclement and drought conditions.
The greens were shaped by Ben Keating alongside the direction of David Minogue and seeded with Pure Green creeping bentgrass. Construction of the three new greens took approximately five weeks due to inclement weather and the subsequent grow-in was completed in the spring 2024. With a really wet winter in 2023 and spring of 2024 the club had a soft opening on the greens in May.
The club held a formal opening ceremony on 15th October with members and club officials to mark the significance of the development.
