Mr Ben Stephens

Ben has been a qualified RIBA Chartered Architect since 2003 and has worked on golf course design projects since 1997. Ben joined EIGCA as candidate for membership in 2017 before becoming a full member in 2022.

His first opportunity came at Greetham Valley where the owner asked him to propose layout options for extending the main golf course from 27 holes to 36 holes including a replacement par 3 course. Ben’s first 18 hole course was at Rutland Water Golf Course the project was designed and built in stages from 2001 to 2007.

He was a partner in SAS Golf Design from 2010 to 2017 and carried out a number of golf course design projects mainly in South West England which he gained experience in designing golf courses with the use of inert fill and achieving a number of complex planning permissions.

Ben is profoundly deaf from birth. He is the first profoundly deaf Golf Course Architect and communicates by means of lipreading with the use of a cochlear implant device.

Ben has an ability to solve complex design solutions. He currently runs both PASTE Architects and PASTE Golf Design which is unique in its regard that it can offer design services for all elements on or around a golf course such as buildings like clubhouses, housing, masterplanning and greenkeepers facilities etc.

Ben is currently working with EIGCA and the R&A in developing a golf course guidance for Golfers with a Disability which he hopes will improve accessibility and understanding in terms of accommodating golfers with a disability on golf courses.
