Tom Mackenzie and Mike Howard oversee phase two of Royal Birkdale work
EIGCA Member, Tom Mackenzie and Candidate For Membership, Mike Howard, both of Mackenzie & Ebert are working on phase 2 of the course improvement plan at Royal Birkdale, using EIGCA Bronze Partner, GolfLink Evolve as contractor. Phase 1 included a major overhaul to the 5th and 7th holes as well as new 14th and 15th holes. This year’s phase focusses on the remaining green surrounds, replacing the hard paths with grass walkways and rebuilding tees, including adding a set of carefully considered forward tees to cater for slower swing speed players better.
This work will be finished this winter in readiness for the 2026 Open Championship.
Tom Mackenzie re-works New South Wales
Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert, is collaborating with Martin Ebert on the re-working of New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney. The work involves re-building every green complex and bunker as well as extensive tee work on this famous old seaside course on the mouth of Botany Bay in Sydney. The work is being done in advance of the Club’s centenary in 2028.
The exceptionally condensed programme sees the entire work completed in four months with the course re-opening just two months after that. Work started on 1st September and all greens will be completed by Christmas. Tom is spending extended periods on site throughout that time, approving all of the key features throughout that time.
