The 2025 ASGCA Conference brought together members to celebrate the Society’s mission, advance the profession, and explore the future of golf course architecture. Across three days, attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions, hands-on learning, and collaborative networking, blending tradition with innovation. EIGCA was represented by President, Gary Johnston, and Executive Officer, Lindsey Collumbell.
Day 1: Membership, mentorship, and strategic focus
The conference opened with a focus on ASGCA’s core mission: creating value for members, partners, and the wider golf industry. Central themes included leadership, connection, and relevance, underscored by five strategic focus areas.
Day 2: Industry impact, data-driven design, and storytelling
Day 2 highlighted ASGCA’s membership and strategic initiatives. Speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration with key decision-makers and allied associations, alongside acknowledging the vital contributions of partners and sponsors.
The conference also explored how player data is revolutionizing course design. Modern shot tracking and dispersion analysis enable architects to optimize green placement, hazard design, and property-line safety, balancing strategy, sustainability, and legal considerations. Subscription-based tools like Arccos datasets allow simulations of design changes to enhance playability and client value.
Later sessions focused on storytelling and professional visibility. Journalist, Brad Klein, shared insights on working with project committees, emphasizing teaching, building relationships, and fostering comfort and confidence. Marketing consultant, Hal Phillips, offered guidance on marketing through social media, trade publications, photography, and multimedia, reinforcing that successful architects communicate their expertise and personality effectively.
EIGCA President, Gary Johnston, presented the results of the joint EIGCA / SAGCA Distance Insights survey.
Day 3: Visit to a Titleist ball factory and their Performance Centre
Day 4: Public golf, management, and restoration
The final day celebrated staff contributions and the ASGCA Foundation’s work, highlighting initiatives supporting public golf, youth programs, and pathways into the profession.
Sessions on public and municipal golf underscored the importance of preserving courses amidst development pressures, with case studies demonstrating community engagement and sustainability strategies. Pace-of-play initiatives, leveraging data and operational insights, were presented as tools to enhance golfer experience and course efficiency.
