Since the Plant Variety Protection Act became law in 1970, the goal at Pure Seed has been to provide the world with better grasses through innovative research testing, plant breeding, and seed technology. This focus led Pure Seed to become one of the first private grass seed companies to release commercial varieties.

Pure Seed's private research program, Pure-Seed Testing Inc. (PST), has over 45 years of turf and forage breeding experience. With two research facilities in the United States (Oregon in the west and North Carolina in the east), the program is able to conduct warm and cool-season grass species testing, screening, evaluating, and crossing. PST collaborates with over 30 universities and private programs across the globe in more than 20 countries.

Two acclaimed grass breeders lead the research program. Crystal Rose-Fricker, president of Pure Seed and PST, has over 30 years of turfgrass and forage breeding experience. Dr. Melodee Fraser, director of research for PST East, has 25 years of turfgrass breeding experience. Leading the next generation of plant breeding is Crystal’s son, Austin Fricker, who is currently adding several new species to the breeding program.

Innovation is the heartbeat of Pure Seed and PST, driving the creation of noticeable advancements in 20 species of both warm and cool season grasses. Responsible for bringing 352 commercial varieties to market, Pure Seed currently has several hundred experimental cultivars under development. Pure Seed has the only seeded seashore paspalum varieties in production.
