After graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture, Michiel worked at a landscape architects office for four years before following his lifelong dream of becoming a golf course architect. He joined the golf design company of Gerard Jol in 2002 and has since completed the EIGCA's Diploma programme and has been involved in the design and renovation of numerous golf courses around Europe. In 2008, Michiel and Philip Spogárd, whom he met at the EIGCA 5th Anniversary Conference and AGM at St. Andrews in 2005, founded Spogárd&VanderVaart Golf Course Architects. One of the biggest recognitions so far is the "Best Development of the year 2011 Reward" for Golf Course Stippelberg (Netherlands) by Golf Inc.

Michiel has more than a decade of experience in the design and planning of golf courses and his naturalistic approach and design style has helped him create courses which are successfully integrated in their surrounding cultural, historical and natural environments.
