Franco Piras, born in 1962, has been a protagonist of the Italian golfing scene during the last 30 years. As a scratch golfer he was one of the leading players in Italy and, in the 1980s playing for the Italian national team, he competed in numerous international tournaments.

Franco was appointed, in 1990, General Manager of Le Rovedine Golf Club in Milan. Here he gained professional experience in maintenance, management, event planning, design and construction. In this period Franco redesigned the existing nine holes and implemented the addition of new nine, built the largest learning centre in Italy, and organized and hosted a main PGA tour event.

After graduating from Milan University in 1992, he focussed his interest on technical design and golf course architecture.

In 1995 Franco became the President of the Mirasole Golf Club and the CEO of GolfVacanze, the company founded by the Piras family to handle the construction and management of the Le Rovedine Golf Club and which in the ensuing years has evolved into a leading group that provides consultancy and services on most aspects related to the golf business.

From 1998 he began to receive important projects as a golf architect, the first being the championship course, Villa Paradiso, which opened for play in 2002 and has been awarded the Best Italian New Course, and Donnafugata in 2011. Many other projects have come during this decade and thanks to his recognized capabilities he has received the accolade of representing Gary Player Design in Italy.

Franco was a member of the New Courses Committee of the Italian Golf Federation from 2000 to 2004. From 2003 he has been recognized as member of the Italian Golf Course Architects Association. In 2008 he became a founder member of the Italian Turfgrass Academy (ITA), and in 2011 he became a Senior Member of the EIGCA.
